Hypnosis is often misunderstood, thanks to movies and flashy stage shows where hypnotists seem to wield mystical powers over their subjects, or tell you how sleepy you are getting. In reality, hypnosis—also known as trance—is a natural state of mind that we all experience daily. Have you ever zoned out on your daily commute arriving with no concept of how much time has past, or been so engrossed in a TV show that you didn’t notice someone sneaking up behind you? These are all forms of self-induced hypnosis.

While these everyday trances may not be very helpful, they demonstrate your brain’s ability to enter deeply focused states. Harnessing these states to create new neural pathways through hypnotherapy can be truly life changing.

Dispelling Common Myths About Hypnosis

Myth: It’s a form of sleep.

Truth: Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis isn’t sleep at all, although it can be used to fall asleep. Most of the time, you’re fully awake and aware during hypnosis.

Myth: The hypnotist is doing hypnosis to you.

Truth: Actually, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. A hypnotist simply guides you; you can only enter hypnosis if you’re willing and open to the experience, and while you are in trance you make your own choices.

Myth: Some people can’t be hypnotized.

Truth: This is untrue. Anyone can enter a hypnotic state, especially those with vivid imaginations and a trusting relationship with their hypnotist.

Myth: Hypnosis means losing control.

Truth: Far from it! In hypnosis, you retain full control over your actions and decisions. You can emerge from the trance at any time and cannot be coerced into doing anything against your will or values.

Myth: You can’t lie in hypnosis.

Truth: You won’t spill secrets unwillingly while hypnotized. In fact, you can lie just as easily in hypnosis as you can in your normal waking state.

Why Try Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy taps into your most powerful mental state, offering insights into your inner workings that can facilitate profound personal change. Whether it’s finding inspiration in a magical inner world, enhancing well-being, breaking habits, healing from trauma, overcoming fears, managing weight, boosting motivation, easing anxiety, alleviating physical and often chronic pain, or improving performance in sports, hypnotherapy can be a game changer.

Once you become accustomed to entering hypnosis with a guide, you can even learn to induce this state on your own—making you your own hypnotist.

So, how will you trance-form your life?
